The only bit of this you need to take away with you is this:

"If you look at the history of painting you’ll notice that all great painters’ first paintings were classical paintings. Later they experimented different techniques, and finally they invented their own style."

I really don't think you can argue the wisdom of this, sure you can spend your days learning all the new things out there and the techniques to apply them butt you only really get good at something by using it day in and day out so at some point you need to stop buying new tools and build something with the ones you have...then see if it stands up the next time the wind blows and if it doesn't then you need to learn why, if it does - then figure out why and do that bit the same way next time :D
