I really like the quote:

“Tiers are not a good thing, they are a necessary evil required to obtain certain levels of scalability, fault tolerance or security.”

This site has is currently deployed on one physical server, but as it is designed in a number of loosely-coupled layers, it will be relatively easy to introduce one or more physical tiers as and when it is needed.
