These seems like it could be pretty handy, especially in a situation where asynchronous calls are required (perhaps server-side calls to web services).

It will be interesting to know an example (preferrably, in real life) where barriers will be useful. I am not able to understand why we need to have another synchronization primitive. Maybe, it is just convenient to use barriers.
