It helps connect highly technical people, it has weathered the years better than any other high level internet protocol. It does not suffer from the spam and abuse that have overtaken other protocols and no Web2.0 technology has supplanted it.

I'd love to, but I only get a small portion of the Internet available to me. My work blocks it and any web-based IRC clients. My personal web site not blocked, however my web hosting service blocks IRC, killing my CGI:IRC install. They say it can be used for spamming. I can only IRC from home, which is nearly useless for me since I'm hardly on the PC at home. :(
