Is computer language popularity important?(advice.cio.com)

Who decides which languages a company will support, and on what basis is that decision made? Is the language's popularity a key criteria... and should it be? If it is... well, someone took the time to analyze language popularity, and while there's reason to quibble over some of the data sources, it's still mighty interesting. Since you're wondering: the most popular languages are C, Java, and Python.
