A strategy like this has always made sense, and Microsoft is not the only crowd doing so (JVM, Parrot, LLVM). Not sure why the article has such a defensive tone, but they bring up good points for the uninformed/ill-informed.

Heh, that's always what you get with Lippert. Knowledgeable guy, but he does tend to be a little paranoid. ;)
