Lhotka’s Post is Pointless – Please Get Rid of VB Microsoft!(codezest.com)

submitted by daveschinkeldaveschinkel(1720) 3 years, 5 months ago

was reading my incoming mail today. Got another .NET Insight email. Decided this time to read it and not push it off to my article folder in Gmail. One of the first lamest articles I’ve ever seen from .NET Insight which can have good articles, was “hotka’s Labyrinth: The End of the Language Wars”. What’s the point of this post? What’s the point of this post? How does this benefit anyone? It’s a null point. He claims that this will end the wars against which language is better because .NET is language independent. As far as I am concerned (someone who started in VB.NET and moved to C# thankfully), this is not the end and language DOES matter because syntax makes my life easier and more productive in terms of typing AND reading.

Sigh. The VB-bashing is very tiresome. The post seemed very subjective, based on one person's opinion on the syntax of VB.

I've used VB, C#, and a number of other languages. But I keep going back to VB because that is what I am familiar with. I actually LIKE the syntax over the C-type.

I'm a C# programmer mainly -- Although I would choose C# over VB that doesn't mean that it should go away. It's personal preference. What do you feel about IronRuby, IronPython, F# etc. Should those also go away because C# is the one true language?

I agree, personal preference does matter. But I'm tired of people comparing VB.NET and C# and implying that VB is inferior just because it's VB.

IronRuby and IronPython are interesting, I want to give those a try in the next few months. I think one strength of .NET is that other languages can be adopted to work with the framework. And the languages all compile to IL (think I have that right), which is what matters in the end.

It has nothing to do with "inferior". Read the post again. I've moved from VB.NET to C# and if you have not experienced it you would not understand. I was once in YOUR shoes. VB is uneccessary hard to read rubbish and the syntax in C# is the same almost just less chars. How much easier can one get in code in terms of typing and readabiliy. The issue with the {} being intimidating is just stupid.
