I also think today that in the era of specialization we live in, it's increasingly difficult to be truly an expert at anything more than a few very specific technologies or even niches within a given technology. For example, if you say you're an expert in ASP.NET that's a pretty wide stroke and it'd be pretty hard to be an expert in all of it - the technology has gotten so wide...
