SQL Server: Why to Avoid TRIM functions in WHERE and JOIN clauses

Trim functions (LTRIM & RTRIM) are most favorite function of most developers but how negatively effect these functions on query performance, if these are used in WHERE or JOIN clauses. WHY ??
