In response to your questions about implementing INotifyPropertyChanged, I found that implementing it in the Model when using Entity Framework Code-First was necessary. Not sure about other approaches.

Good article, have you looked at Caliburn.Micro at all? It has some similarities to your project.

hmmm I'm really hearing lots of different things here.
I have read about Caliburn.Micro but never actually had a look at it, sorry.

My preference would be to *not* implement it in the model, but with EF Code-first I was left with no choice. Binding wouldn't work properly if I didn't. Not sure if this is always the case or not.

If you look at the official guidelines, it there is *no problem* with implementing INPC/INCC in the model. This often saves on an unnecessary layer of abstraction. I believe I told this to you on IRC, teusje.

Also, Caliburn.Micro is a pretty good framework... I second that recommendation.
