Creating a "short link" internet explorer addin

In this post I'll give an example of a short link system that enables one to easily create short links while typing in Internet Explorer, using an Internet Explorer addon that conveniently places itself in the context menu whenever we right click on some text and a .NET webservice that handles the short link functionality.
