Cassandra Jump Start For The Windows Developer

Cassandra is an open source distributed database management system. It is an Apache Software Foundation top-level project, as of February 17, 2010, designed to handle very large amounts of data spread out across many commodity servers while providing a highly available service with no single point of failure. It is a NoSQL solution that was initially developed by Facebook and powers their Inbox Search feature. Jeff Hammerbacher, who led the Facebook Data team at the time, has described Cassandra as a BigTable data model running on an Amazon Dynamo-like infrastructure.

Any() versus Count()

Jimmy Bogard brought to my attention today that I had been doing something wrong all along. I've been using Count() on my enumerations when I should have been using Any(). I've even done this in a presentation I've been giving the past few months.
C# Recorder using IronRuby

The Ruby languages has some very powerful built-in abilities. These are now available in C# 4.0 thanks to the dynamic keyword and IronRuby. In this post I take advantage of some of the powerful Ruby built-in abilities to create a class that records C# statements and playbacks them on an arbitrary object - a task that has been very complicated to achieve until now.

Design Patterns - Using the Observer Pattern in C#

The Observer Pattern belongs to the category of Behavioral patterns. In some applications, the state of an object (the subject) is constantly changing (Ex: the price of a product varies depending on market demand). There could be other objects (observers) that are interested in getting notified when the state of the subject changes. The Observer Pattern can be used to communicate the changes between a subject and one or more observers. The Observer Pattern defines a one to one dependency between the subject and the observers so that when a subject changes state, all the observers are notified.

What's New in Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) 4.0 Part- II

In part 1 of this article, we went through a new feature of WCF - 'Simple Configuration'. In this second part of the article series, we will see how WCF 4.0 performs routing.

Nuclex Framework on CodePlex

Nuclex.org has finally published their Nuclex Framework, a library of advanced building blocks for XNA game programming, as Open Source on CodePlex!

Just some of the features: 3D Vector font rendering, multi-threaded particle system simulation, 3D SpriteBatch replacement, content compression using LZMA (7-Zip), graphical user interfaces with skin support, texture atlas creation, game state management, collision detection, C++' deque ported to C#, debug overlay renderer, automatic vertex declaration creator, game state management and more, all organized into neatly isolated building blocks you can pick from.

The code has more than 1,400 unit tests with some assemblies achieving 100.0% test coverage and is thoroughly and completely documented.

Integrating OpenID in an ASP.NET MVC Application using DotNetOpenAuth

OpenId is getting more popular and with it requests to integrate it into Web sites as a user authentication mechanism. In this post I'll discuss the OpenId integration on CodePaste.net in an ASP.NET MVC application discussing both high level OpenId concepts, the process and the code implementation.
