There is this myth among developers and DBAs that SQL Server has a natural order that is logical and predictable (and can therefore be relied on). Not so! I wanted to take a few moment to explain and debunk the myth, explain how VistaDB is different, and share something I learned along the way. The Myth(s) SQL Server stores entries in a natural order based upon the first column. SQL Server always appends inserted rows at the end of the current table. Unindexed data is always available in the order it was inserted. Dot Net developers often don't care about these things, but they should.

Yeah, it does! And I don't necessarily mean denial of service - that would mean that I couldn't get any programming done. Nope, far from it - but it sure is denial of sleep attacking me. Come one, I am struggling to keep up with all the new runtimes, features, frameworks and best practices coming out of Redmond. It's awesome and actually fun; no doubt about it - but sometimes it is excruciating as well. And today I am going to talk about the excruciating experience of seeing another reinvented wheel hobble out of Microsoft.

Now I know we are probably only one of ten companies in the world who actually need to write data plugins for Visual Studio. But there are a few things that are so broken they tend to really drive me nuts. I had a chance to speak with other DDEX developers at TechEd last year and asked them about these things. Almost universally they said "Yep, it's broke". And when I asked how they dealt with these issues, they almost all said that they ended up having to write custom wizards, dialogs, etc for Visual Studio because the built in ones are broke or don't know how to use Data Providers correctly.
