Convenience Kills, or the Case Against RAD Tools(kohari.org)

submitted by ang3lfir3ang3lfir3(660) 3 years, 9 months ago

A rather heated discussion erupted last week on Twitter and IRC concerning so-called “drag-and-drop demos” — point-and-click demonstrations of “software development” that just involve dragging controls around on a graphical designer without a lot of actual coding involved. Being entirely unable to resist joining in on debates, I had to chime in and give my two cents. read more...

IronNails : Rails like development for IronRuby with WPF/Silverlight(flanders.co.nz)

submitted by casualjimcasualjim(520) 3 years, 9 months ago

For my book IronRuby I’m working on chapter 4. That chapter is about doing WPF development with IronRuby. I started out with a straight port of Witty to IronRuby. As I was doing that the cogs started turning and I came up with a way to bring the rails style of development to WPF. I decided to investigate that route a little bit further and now I have a small framework that enables you to write WPF applications with the MVC paradigm. I decided to open that code up as open source and host it on github. read more...

Does Visual Studio Rot the Mind? (charlespetzold.com)

submitted by MichaelDotNetMichaelDotNet(450) 3 years, 11 months ago

An oldie but a goodie: Should we just surrender to Visual Studio's insistence on writing our code for us? Or is Visual Studio sapping our programming intelligence rather than augmenting it? This talk dissects the code generated by Visual Studio; analyzes the appalling programming practices it perpetuates; rhapsodizes about the joys, frustrations, and satisfactions of unassisted coding. read more...
