LightSpeed + LINQPad - perfect partners

Today Mindscape released a LINQPad driver for LightSpeed 3.0. This extends LINQPad and allows developers to run LINQ Queries against LightSpeed models which, in turn, allows querying against SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Amazon's SimpleDB, MySQL, SQLite, VistaDB and DB2!

How to create a DropDownList with ASP.NET MVC

The DropDownList html helper differs a bit from the standard Html helper methods, and, not surprisingly, the way it works is one of the questions I get asked the most.
How to improve HtmlHelper.RenderPartial perf: don't run in debug mode

There has a been a lot of talking on a possible "big design flaw" in ASP.NET MVC: partial view path resolution was not cached.
After a bit of testing I found out that caching kicks in only in release mode.
ASP.NET MVC for RoR developers: do as locals do

A few days ago, Simon Tokumine, a Ruby On Rails developer from UK who had to build a web app using ASP.NET MVC wrote a nice post that makes a comparison between RoR and ASP.NET MVC.
In this post I'm going to give him and to other RoR developers that want (or are forced to) evaluate and eventually use ASP.NET MVC in a project the tips that they need to do as locals do

Finally the book has its cover designed, and it's available for pre-sale on Amazon.
Keyvan also discusses the pro and cons of writing a book based on pre-release versions of a technology.

Free Visual Studio File Explorer Add-in

The Visual Studio File Explorer Add-in (sexy name we know, but hey, it's self documenting) is a free Tool Window add-in for VS 2008 that provides a Windows Explorer style file system view. It's particularly useful for performing routine file system tasks without the need to "context switch" away from Visual Studio, which can be time-consuming over the course of days and weeks. It is shell-enabled so extensions like TortoiseSVN work too.

IronNails : Rails like development for IronRuby with WPF/Silverlight

For my book IronRuby I'm working on chapter 4. That chapter is about doing WPF development with IronRuby. I started out with a straight port of Witty to IronRuby. As I was doing that the cogs started turning and I came up with a way to bring the rails style of development to WPF. I decided to investigate that route a little bit further and now I have a small framework that enables you to write WPF applications with the MVC paradigm. I decided to open that code up as open source and host it on github.
