ScottGu: Introducing "Razor" - a new view engine for ASP.NET

"ASP.NET MVC has always supported the concept of "view engines" - which are the pluggable modules that implement different template syntax options. The "default" view engine for ASP.NET MVC today uses the same .aspx/.ascx/.master file templates as ASP.NET Web Forms. Other popular ASP.NET MVC view engines used today include Spark and NHaml.

The new view-engine option we've been working on is optimized around HTML generation using a code-focused templating approach. The codename for this new view engine is "Razor", and we'll be shipping the first public beta of it shortly."

Mythbusting SharePoint 2010 - Think you know SharePoint? Think again!

When someone mentions SharePoint to you, what do you do? Do you think of a Document Management System? Do you think Content Management? Do you think Collaboration? Do you find somebody else to talk to? For many people SharePoint is still somewhat of a mystery, they've heard of it, but don't really know what it is. For others it is a painful memory from a few years ago, when the promise of easy web development was not fulfilled.

Yet for some, it is the hottest thing in the Microsoft armoury at present. Dave McMahon explains why.

Stored Procedure Optimization Tips - Best Practices

Key Points discussed in the articles are :

 1. Include SET NOCOUNT ON statement
 2. Use schema name with object name
 3. Do not use the prefix "sp_" in the stored procedure name
 4. Use IF EXISTS (SELECT 1) instead of (SELECT *)
 5. Try to avoid using SQL Server cursors whenever possible
 6. Keep the Transaction as short as possible
 7. Use TRY-Catch for error handling

Announcing the Microsoft AJAX CDN - ScottGu's Blog

Earlier today the ASP.NET team launched a new Microsoft Ajax CDN (Content Delivery Network) service that provides caching support for AJAX libraries (including jQuery and ASP.NET AJAX). The service is available for free, does not require any registration, and can be used for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.

Limit Number of Characters in a TextArea using jQuery

The MaxLength property works for a textbox but not for a TextArea. I recently bumped into a JavaScript solution which demoed how to Limit the Number of Characters in a Textarea or Text Field. I thought of replicating the functionality in jQuery and here's what I came up with!

I Spose I'll Just Say It: Still Waiting For a GOOD Reason to Learn MVC

Why you shouldn't learn MVC

Earlier today Rob Connery posted about why he thinks You Should Learn MVC. Rob is a great guy and we always have lively discussions whenever we meet at conferences. I was in the middle of writing a long comment on his blog when I decided it might be better as it's own post.

I Spose I'll Just Say It: You Should Learn MVC

I'm never shy about my opinion - why start now? I've been reading a lot of posts flying about on whether you should learn MVC, Summing up the differences so you can decide when to use it, I even found a post that offers a scorecard approach! I remember reading the latter post thinking to myself "how can you possibly put a number next to Testability? And why it is only 2 more points than "using a RAD designer"? Isn't this missing the entire point?
