Documentation for Telepathic Developers(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 1 month ago

Code insight started as a helpful utility but has now almost completely replaced API documentation. This puts a lot more pressure on the API and it’s authors - not only should it cover all required functionality, but it must also be intuitive to use. We must acknowledge and understand the effects of those tools in order to make our APIs better. read more...

Simple CV Spam Filter: if (certified) move("junk")(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 3 months ago

We want to hire a few more people, and some new agency is flooding us with Microsoft certified contractors. A couple of them attached MSCD.NET to their name, in the first line of the CV, as if it was their biggest achievement to date. After the interviews, that thought seems very close to the truth. read more...

How not to build a castle on a swamp(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 3 months ago

From time to time, programmers sail into uncharted waters - the business and clients agree to give them some time to build a prototype and evaluate a new technology, or explore ways to get something done. A month or so later, after a software scaffolding is built to show how something can be done, one of the worst examples of corporate insanity happens - almost certainly. Some brilliant mind thinks of a way to save money or deliver earlier by patching up and shipping the prototype. read more...

Blinded by the user interface(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 3 months ago

A friend of mine has a problem - his team worked for months on a big system with great success, marvellous technical achievements and a very elegant architecture. However, the users don’t share his enthusiasm. They don’t appreciate the architecture, flexibility and openness to change. Somehow, they seem ‘blinded by the user interface‘. read more...

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 4 months ago

It’s been almost a year since I got involved into a big .Net enterprise project. We pushed the technology to it’s limits and found out that some popular tools were just not cut out for that job. However, I’ve also learned that if you dig deep enough, there are some very promising tools for .Net on the Net. read more...

Developers are from Magrathea, Customers are from Ursa Minor Beta(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 5 months ago

Most customers will always choose more functionality and faster delivery over testing and documentation - not to mention GUI polishing. They will look you in the eye, tell you that they sincerely understand the software will have problems once it is live, and then come back furious when the software does not work. We have to stop the vicious cycle - and start delivering better. read more...

Moving from software production to software publishing(gojko.net)

submitted by gojkogojko(1115) 5 years, 6 months ago

Iterative delivery is bringing software production very close to monthly magazine publishing. Although being on time and without problems cannot be attributed to most software releases, good magazines maintain quality and produce great issues month after month. What can we take from magazine publishing to improve software releases? read more...
