Using External Configuration File for Enterprise Library Configuration(blogs.microsoft.co.il)

submitted by gilfgilf(2139) 2 years, 6 months ago

One of the things that I always do when I’m using Enterprise Library is to separate its configurations to external configuration file. The reason is very obvious – using Enterprise Library makes configuration files very crowded. Since this is the case, the configuration files become unmanageable and then its time to separate the Enterprise Library’s configurations from other configurations. read more...

Booting from a VHD(blogs.msdn.com)

submitted by CharlieCalvertCharlieCalvert(7875) 2 years, 8 months ago

Hosting an OS in a virtual machine can be very useful for developers, but sometimes one pays a price in terms of performance. In Windows 7 developers can get improved performance in virtual machines by native booting a VHD. First create a Virtual PC that hosts Windows 7, then restart your computer, and finally boot directly into the VHD that contains the Windows 7 OS. When you native boot a VHD your virtual machine runs very close to the metal; performance is greatly enhanced and you have much better support for OS features that may not be available inside a standard Virtual PC. read more...

submitted by tehliketehlike(1000) 2 years, 11 months ago

I have spent a couple of days on implementing a fast add reference dialog box for Visual Studio. The time of adding a reference has been a great time to have some coffee, to have lunch, or even a way to save economy (remember, developer time costs money!). read more...

Microsoft deprecating Oracle client in Dot Net 4(vistadb.net)

submitted by vistadbvistadb(879) 2 years, 11 months ago

Microsoft has announced through a blog that the ADO.NET 4 spec will mark the Oracle client as deprecated with plans for removal. They are also recommending that users go to a third party Oracle provider. Stop Helping the Competition? Wow, this will mark the first time an ADO.NET provider has been removed from the .Net framework. Is this a case of Microsoft trimming the fat, or pushing Oracle? I always thought it a bit of a free ride that Microsoft was helping Oracle by building their provider for them... read more...

submitted by JakobssonJakobsson(485) 2 years, 11 months ago

Strongly typed include in EF(mattias-jakobsson.net)

submitted by JakobssonJakobsson(485) 2 years, 11 months ago

The other day I was talking to my old teacher, Jon Wiberg, at "Ljud & Bild skolan". He told me that he had built a extension for the entity framework that enables you to use a strongly typed version of the ".Include()" method in Entity Framework using a lambda expression. I think it´s a lot better approach then just using "magic strings" as a compiletime error is allways better then a runtime error. read more...

A response to Validation in a DDD world (devlicio.us)

submitted by jdschwarjdschwar(365) 3 years, 3 months ago

Jimmy Bogard presented a well written argument for always keeping validation out of entities in a domain driven design except in "the absolute worst case." But, IMO, there is simply no black and white verdict on where validation must live in a DDD application and must be carefully considered at the beginning of any project, taking into consideration the motivations behind validation, the scope of the project, the maturity of the development team, and the balance between philosophical purity and practical maintainability. read more...

Patterns, Purists, and Sinkholes(blog.wekeroad.com)

submitted by adminjewadminjew(1490) 3 years, 3 months ago

Before I was a geek, I was a Geologist. A Geophysicist to be precise – but mostly I just tell people I was a Geologist. I worked a lot with environmental cleanup, but I also spent a lot of time doing what’s known as “Geotechnical” work – the stuff that happens before buildings are built and holes are dug. It can be kind of boring, but it’s crucially important. One day I was sitting in our lab with some dark Bay Mud in a crucible, slowly adding water in measured doses and then pouring the mud through a screen and weighing out differences. I won’t bore you with the details – I’ll just tell you that I was 23 and cranky that this is what my career amounted to – a bunch of rigorous nonsense where I got to weigh mud. read more...
