I want a DotNetKicks "kick it" image+link on some posts, but not all - and there is no automated way to do that. So I created an "Insert Kick It Counter..." plugin for Windows Live Writer to insert a placeholder, and a Wordpress plugin to insert the image+link when the placeholder is found.
