LICENSE ACTIVATION REQUIRED by all new versions of Microsoft software, including Windows Vista (all versions). This is another reason to stay away from all new Microsoft products and keep an open mind to the emerging Linux market place. This is signs of a slow growing company spending more time protecting existing assets instead of focusing on future innovation. With this much sophistication of feature lockout and adding more and more inconveniences to end users, it's time to take a step back and look at what the rest of the world is doing. I was tired of being bothered by popup windows regarding Volume License Activation on my lab PC's at work. These were all built by licenses provided by Microsoft for our company to use for testing. After my personal frustration, I found some great alternative and best of all, they ARE FREE!!!! The first one is Open SUSE 10 ( http://en.opensuse.org/Download ). Completely free, you have the option of paying for Enterprise support, should you need it. This is owned by a great Network Operating System company with a strong background in security, Novell. Best of all, IT WORKS GREAT!!! I now run it on my Dell laptop and I have to say, it has a very nice user experience and actually performs better than Windows Vista on the same hardware! Lots of free goodies with MP3 players and all! You will NEVER NEED TO WORRY ABOUT VIRUSES AND SPYWARE EVER AGAIN!!! Another good free Desktop Operating System is Fedora (the preferred OS for Software Developers on Linux). Unlike Microsoft, they encourage customization and redistribution. Best of all, IT'S FREE!!! (Download it at http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora )! This was a very clean wizard based installation that walks you through the process of getting it running. The Third one I Found was built by Sun Microsystems, which build Enterprise class servers and software for the Fortune 500 market place. It's called Solaris 10 x86. They have now embraced open source and free distribution of their Operating System. You can DOWNLOAD IT FREE ( http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp )!!! This is another hot product with great support from a large Enterprise class company, best of all, IT CAN'T BE CONTAMINATED BY SPYWARE AND VIRUSES!!!! There are even more out there but I can tell you from years of IT experience that each Desktop Operating System listed above works well with VMWARE
