How to get RTS units to find an attack position…(www.temporalwars.com)

My original idea was to take the attacker’s position, and then locate a position somewhere in front of the attackie position. If an A* position was blocked, I would then use a formula to find some open location. The problem with this logic was the fact that the units would dance around, from node to node.
