In lambda calculus, the only primitive building blocks are functions. There's no built-in Boolean values, but you can define them with functions. Boolean values are functions that take two arguments. By conventions, the first argument (the one to the left) represents the true case, whereas the second argument (to the right) signifies the false case - just like the ternary operator.
