I agree with some of your points, such as performance differences, but at the end of the day I find that switching from one ORM to another is far more painful than switching from MSSQL to MySQL or Postgres. I also find SQL much more straight-forward than some of the esoteric hoop-jumping we have to go through sometimes to prevent our ORM from doing one of the following common pitfalls: retrieving too much data, filtering in memory rather than at the db level, joining incorrectly, RBAR, and the list goes on. I'm not saying do away with ORMs, I'm just saying we shouldn't advocate for an all or nothing approach either way.
